What do people consider a holy city?

In most systems of religious faith a holy city is the place where their beliefs had their origin or the place where their founder was born of died. For example, Rome is considered holy by Catholics because the scriptures say that Saints Peter and Paul wanted to conquer the so called city of sin. Both saints were martyred there. As far as I know Mecca is holy to Islam because The Prophet Mohammed was born there. Jerusalem and many other cities in the Holy Land are holy to Jews, Christians and Islam because many events considered sacred by all three occurred there.
