Literally, Islam means to 'submit and surrender one's will in the way of God'. To be honest, ALL the prophets and messengers have been practicing and preaching the same thing. One can even say that Islam was born with Adam himself but, then again one can also say that it was born in the Arabian city of Mecca, where Muhammad (PBUH) was born and, where the early revelations took place.

Islam itself ultimately has been around since the beginning of mankind because islam translates as "Submission to the will God(one)". Most religions began as Islam-submission to ONE God, but over time were changed and corrupted. The Islam we know today-revealed by the Prophet mohammad, began in Saudi Arabia.

The Byzantine Empire, as well as the Persian Empire were located near the Arabian Peninsula, in the budding years of Islam.
I wouldn't call it the birthplace of religion, but Jerusalem has played an important role in 3 major religions, which are (in chronological order) Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. None of these religions actually were born in Jerusalem.
