A blind spot refers to an area that you can not see. This term often refers to the area right behind and to the side of a car where you can not see the other car in any of your mirrors.

If you are behind a truck and you can't see his mirrors, you are in his blind spot.

The blind spot is the result of the macula (of the retina) not having the

photoreceptors which the rest of the retina has. Therefore, with monocular vision, there is a spot, a few feet in front of you, which actually appears invisible. Binocular vision (seeing with both eyes) takes care of the blind spot problem, since the other eye sees the first eye's blind spot.

The optic disk represents the beginning of the optic nerve (second cranial nerve) and the point where axons from over one million retinal ganglion cells coalesce. Clinical evaluation of the optic nerve head is critical in the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma and other optic neuropathies that may lead to vision loss.
