I own a 1975 MB 240D. The knob your asking about works my rear window defroster.
How do i remove a shifter on a mercedes
turn the little wheel on the left side of the shifter
passenger seat cable its under seat drive cable
you remove shifter knob, key on, slighty pull back on lever and lightly rap top of shift lever with soft faced mallet, this will disengage park but you nstill have a problem with shifter or possible brake light switch
When I pull the shifter handle from 2 wheel High to 4 wheel High, nothing happens. It stays in 2 high! What are some of the problems that may exist?
Maybe brake shift cable from brake to gear shifter?
It's the red switch on the center console, right in front of the shifter.
mercedes benz 1997 c280 my key won't turn at all. I've tried moving steering wheel and shifter. still won't turn. battery HAS POWER
press down hard on foot brake at the same time move shifter.
Bad transmission?Linkage or cable control out of adjustment?
moving the shift lever from park to drive or any other position with the engine off will not hurt anything in the transmission. in an older automatic trans by moving the shifter from park to drive the shifter is mechanically atatched to a lever which is attached to a manual valve inside the transmission. since the engine is off there is no pressure in the transmission so nothing happens. on a newer auto trans the shifter is attached to a lever which moves electrical contacts to do the same thing as the old mechanical trans lever.
Most likely cause is that you have a bad shifter module, which is the shifter itself. I've seen lots of these, try and play with the shifter to get it out of park, and make sure you have the brake pedal depressed. If you can get it out of park take it to a repair shop this way, and leave the shifter in neutral if you have to turn the car off, that way you can still start the car, and still move the shift lever to drive.
