Achilles had little choice in giving up Briseis to Agamemnon, and makes his displeasure well known in refusing to fight Troy until Patroclus dies. Achilles only returns to the fighting to avenge Patroclus' death and Agamemnon returns Briseis to him afterwards, swearing not to have shared a bed with her. Achilles regarded her as his bride - his wife - and she regarded him as her husband.
Why does Achilles hate Hector?

How does Achilles kill hector in the Iliad?
Achilles fought hector out side of the gates of Troy. Both talked about what would happen if either of them killed the other. Achilles drew first blood by throwing his spear at hector. Achilles misses hector and hector throws his spear at Achilles and he blocks the spear with his shield. This is what myth tells us Athena goddess of wisdom takes Achilles spear and throws it back to Achilles and hector does not see this. But hector had no reserved spear but thinks his one of his brothers is by his side. Athena posses as one of hectors brothers and tells hector that he will help hector fight Achilles. Hector is tricked by Athena and then has no choice. Hector charges for Achilles and Achilles does the same. Achilles has a longer weapon and so he thrashes his spear into hectors windpipe. Hector still has some few moments left and then ask Achilles to give his body back to his loved ones at troy so he may be properly buried. Achilles refuses and hectors last words is the Paris t who was the one who started the entire war will kill Achilles at the gates of troy where hector is being killed now. In all honest opinion I think that Achilles didn't have help from a goddess and that he had a javelin and a spear but hector only had a javelin and did not see Achilles spear. The he rest of the fight I think happened.
What was the horror at the Xanthus river?
In Book 21 of The Illiad Achilles singlehandedly splits the Trojan army, driving half back into the city and half into the river where he begins hacking them to pieces with no mercy. The river god Xanthus complains to Achilles that all the corpses are impeding the flow of the water and asks him to stop killing the Trjans. Achilles agrees, but then says he first has to kill the remaining Trojans. At this point Xanthus attacks Achilles, throwing the corpses of the dead out of the river and sending large waves to drown him. Fearing he'll die without honor, drowned like a child, Achilles prays to Zeus for assistance. Athena and Poseidon hear and promise Achilles he won't be killed and tell him to kill the Trojans and Hector. Athena gives Achilles speed so he can outrun the waves and Hera calls on Hephaestus, the god of fire, to fight Xanthus. Hephaestus sets the corpses on fire and all the plants near the river are burned as well, the river boils and all the animals in it die, finally Xanthus concedes the battle.
