The hole decreases due to metal expansion.
Convection is the movement caused within a fluid by "warm currents". The hotter fluid will rise, pushing the cooler fluid down, which then in turn gets heated, creating a continuous cycle.
The circular motion is called convection current.

The current is called a convection current.
Wind can be caused by either pressure or temperature differences. From there you get into which is cause and which is effect. Wind starts when you have heated air rising and cooler air flowing in to take its place. As the lighter heated air rises, the cooler, heavier air will rush in to take its place. Once the heated air cools in the upper atmosphere, it then falls back.
The density of heated air is less than the density of cooler air.
The convection zone is how the energy from the core is transported to the photosphere. The plasma is heated, rises to near the surface, cools and then falls back toward the core to be heated again.
The rising and sinking motion is called convection current.
