we measured pickup-to-oil-pan clearance with a lump of Playdough. Shoot for around 3/8 to ½ inch

The most obvious symtom would be overheating of the engine.
First of all, Chevy stopped making the 5.7L 350 engine in late 1999 The oil pump that's in your engine is behind the timing cover on the front of the engine and not in the oil pan.

Chevy did not use an Inertia switch.......
No it will not. Now it will bolt right in there but the transmission will not work and the fuel pump in the fuel tank has to much fuel pressure for a carburetor
water pump will sit on engine with lower radiator hose inlet to the left, make sure you dont have a "long water pump", it wont work, 350 is a "short water pump"
.002" is what I have on a fresh rebuild.
Check water pump and pump gasket.
