July is winter in the Southern Hemisphere. The weather in the northern parts of Australia is sunny and warm, with little rain. As you head further south, the temperature becomes cooler, with some rain along the southern coastal areas - and even snow in the southern mountains. The central Outback desert areas are hot during the day (but not as hot as in the Australian summer!) and quite cool in the evening.
July is one of the best months to visit the northern regions in Australia as the temperatures are not excessively hot and it's not the rainy season (November to March) when many locations in northern Western Australia are closed. The ocean temperature is great for swimming and snorkeling, and whale-watching and dolphin tours are active.
In the southern parts of the country, however, it's mostly too chilly to swim and a sweater is needed even on sunny days.
