The Yellow Eyed Penguin mainly nests in forest or scrub. preferably in amongst Flax and lupin along gullies and slopes or sometimes the shore facing the sea. These areas are usually in small bays or headland area.

The Yellow Eyed Penguin is found in New Zealand on the South East Coast of South Island, Auckland Islands, Campbell Islands, Foveaux Strait and Stewart Island. It was able to live in New Zealand areas from Antarctica after the Waitaha Penguin became extinct many hundred years ago.

The reason why this penguin lives there is because it is suitable for their species and good breeding areas and good for food.
