It used to be thought that the red, or Lesser Panda was related but it has been placed into a differant genetic family and so cannot scientifically be classed as related. 4 other relations to the Giant Panda genetically are currently extinct. There are only 2 other Sub Species, these are
- Ailuropoda melanoleuca qinlingensis - Qinling Panda
- Ailuropoda melanoleuca hastorni
