There are a number of "poles" on Earth, and deciding which one is closest to Russia is almost meaningless because of Russia's vast area.

  1. The "Northern Pole of Cold" is most definitely within Russia itself, being in Eastern Sakha Republic. Generally the location of this place, which records the lowest temperature in the northern hemisphere, is taken as either Verkhoyansk or Oymyakon in deep hollows where cold air from the Siberian High accumulates. It must be noted that temperatures during the dark winter in these valleys are lower that at higher altitudes because the lack of deep sunlight causes constant temperature inversions.
  2. The "Northerm Pole of Inaccessibility" at either 84°03′N 174°51′W or 84.05°N 174.85°W is the point in the Arctic Ocean further from land.Franz Josef Land and the New Siberian Islands are two of the three closest land masses to this point.
  3. The geographic North Pole is the conventional meaning of "pole", but the nearest land to it is Coffee Club Island off the Greenland coast, not Cape Fligely on Franz Josef Land.
  4. The North Magnetic Pole is the point on the Earth's surface in the Northern Hemisphere where a compass points vertically downwards. This is near the Geographic North Pole, but it moves due to magnetic changes.
