Lincoln did not like slavery, but he believed in the Constitution. He wanted to see slavery abolished by law and he did not want to see it spread. If 3/4 of the states were free, they could pass a constitutional amendment to end slavery.

The closest idea to Lincoln's stance on slavery is his belief in gradual emancipation and colonization. Lincoln opposed the expansion of slavery into new territories and believed that the institution would eventually die out. He also advocated for compensated emancipation, where slave owners would be paid for the release of their slaves. However, Lincoln's views evolved over time, and he eventually issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared all slaves in Confederate territories to be free.
