The coldest state in Australia is Tasmania, which is Australia's Island state. Whilst the Australian Alps, located in New South Wales and Victoria, are known for their snowfalls that allow for snow sports in winter, Tasmania also experiences heavy snowfalls in some areas of the state during winter. Tasmania, though subject to some very high temperatures in summers which lead to a high bushfire risk, tends to have lower temperatures overall than the states on the mainland.
