The hajr-e aswad is currently black. But it used to be white when it first came down to earth. See this hadith found in Tirmidhi:

Ibn Abbas narrated that: The Messenger of Allah said: "The Black Stone descended from the Paradise, and it was more white than milk, then it was blacked by the sins of the children of Adam." (Hasan)

What exactly is the black stone?

The Black Stone, better known as "Hajr-e-Aswad" is the stone placed in the corner of Kaa'batullaah. This stone was laid in its place by Rasoolullaah (saws). There are four stones which does not belong to earth namely, the black stone, the stone of Maqaam-e-Ibraahim (the place where Maulaana Ibraahim (as) stood and built Kaa'ba), the stone in the Jerusalem from which Rasoolullaah (saws) went on Me'raaj and lastly the stone of Maulaana Moosa (as) from which 12 streams of water originated. These four stones are meteorites. If Kaabatullaah is the Imaam then Hajr-e-Aswad is in the place of Hujjat. The Tawaaf (circumambulation) is void if Hajr-e-Aswad is not kissed at its end. If touching or kissing the stone is not possible at the end of Tawaaf then one should say salaam to it, only then his tawaaf is valid.

What is hajre aswad?

The Hajr-e-Aswad is a Black Stone, in the courtyard of the Great Mosque of Mecca. The stone was brought to earth from paradise/Jannah by Angel Jibrail (Aalehe As'salam) when Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS) were building Kaaba. When it was first brought from paradise/Jannah it was whiter and brighter than snow and milk and its length was about one feet. Allah SWT has given the stone a special place and said that anyone kissing it will be forgiven for all the sins, and on the Day of Judgement the Hijre-Aswad will testify for everyone visiting it. Over the years the stone has become dull and black and reduced in size because it has "sucked" the sins of all the sinners visiting it. It is believed that the other half that is embedded in the wall is still whiter and brighter than snow and milk. Please be informed that kissing the stone while visiting Kaaba is only voluntary and pilgrims do it because it is the sunnah of our Prophet (PBUH). Imagining that you are kissing it while standing at a distance is also enough. Also be informed that people do not worship the stone, neither have it been worshipped ever.

Which stone can not sink in water?

Pumice does not sink in water. This is because pumice, type of lava, forms by the rapid cooling of lava that contains significant amounts of dissolved gasses. When the lava erupts the sudden decrease in confining pressure on the lava allows this gas to come out of solution. This makes lots of bubbles form very rapidly (the lava is essentially a foam). As the lava cools very rapidly the bubbles are trapped in the solidifying material forming the hollow void spaces known as vesicles which result in pumices low density.
