In RuneScape, combat is classified as being either close-quarter, ranged or magic-based. The system that governs the relationship between these three types of combat is called the "Combat Triangle." Basically, what this means is that each class of combat - whether it be Warrior (close-quarter), Archer (ranged) or Magician (magic-based) - has a certain advantage over another class. For instance, a mace-wielding knight won't be standing for long when up against a highly-skilled spellcaster. But in turn, the magician stands no chance when faced with a deadly accurate archer. And the same goes for the archer when in combat with a warrior.
So there you are. Each style of combat is the best in its own right. Personally I think warriors are over-rated, archers are seldom seen nowadays, and magicians just don't get enough credit.
There are three combat classes: Warrior (Melee), Rangers, and Mages. If you still need more information the related link I have attached to the question is to an article about the Runescape Combat Triangle.
