Was qwerty invented to slow typing down?

No, on the contrary. Back in the days of mechanical typewriters each letter sat at the end of an arm that moved up and struck the paper when a key was struck. If the letters you hit happened to sit on arms that were next to each other, the arms would often tangle and jam - and that would really slow typing down. By spreading the most common letters out, the inventor reduced the risk of the typewriter jamming. These days, with no moving parts, another distribution would make more sense - but not enough to make it worthwhile to relearn typing.
