Anoles or 'house geckos' would most likely be what you are describing...

Green Anoles are common throughout the US, often incorrectly referred to as 'Chameleons' because of their ability to change color depending on light conditions, mood, and their surroundings. They can change from green to brown. Males have a bright red 'dew lap' they 'puff out' during mating season.

House Geckos are tan, almost clear in strong light, pattern can vary from solid color to darker brown spots or rings.
