Christians see the comparison as positive - sheep are cared for by the shepherd (god) and wander the hills eating grass. They are passive and happy. A life of ease without care or concern.

To more skeptical types it is different. Being the sheep isn't as good as modern (non-farming Christians) seem to think:

  • Shepherds tend sheep - it is their job - they don't see them as friends or equals
  • Sheep are not seen as intelligent - As sharp as a sheep is not a motto
  • Sheep follow commands and the herd, they don't think for themelves.
  • Sheep don't defend themselves.
  • Shepherds eventually kill and eat every sheep they have except for those that get lost or sold to be eaten by others.
  • Shepherds especially like to take baby sheep from their mothers to eat them
  • In The Bible sheep are prime candidates for living sacrifice, with no benefit to themselves.
  • Sheep that don't produce food (milk) or wool are killed and or skinned

Even more amusing, the incidence of homosexuality among sheep is about 10%, about the same as that in humans (even Christians). Many see this as another of the Bible's little hidden jokes.
