It is a normal structure of the cortical tissue in the kidneys; normal renal tissue.

This area can be enlarged as a congenital condition that is usually insignificant. This is called Prominent Column of Bertin or Hypertrophied Column of Bertin and is also called Renal Pseudotumor when seen on an X-ray, since it can be mistaken for a tumor or mass in the kidney, but it is ordinarily a benign condition.
