In the end, Scout and Jem are followed on their way home from a pageant at the school house. Mr. Ewell attacks the two of the children and knocks Jem unconcious while he tries to strangle Scout. Boo Radley appears and stabs Bob in the chest and he carries Jem home with Scout following. Then, Scout finally meets Boo Radley for the first and last time. The book closes with Atticus in Jem's room reading him a story.

Atticus Finch loses his case protecting Tom Robinson, who is shot in prison. The excuse for his death is that he attempted to escape, though there's speculation as to whether or not he DID attempt fleeing.

Arthur Radley saves Atticus's two children from an attack from Bob Ewell, who tried to harm them with a knife on their way home at night. Jeremy (or "Jem") was hurt, unconcious, and brought home by Arthur. He was tended to by a doctor, and wasn't critically hurt.

Bob Ewell was killed by a kitchen knife, either by Jem or Arthur. The story doesn't make it clear which, but the town's Sheriff decided to overlook it, and simply say that Bob fell on his knife when he was tripped.
