The IPPC standard only impacts packaging using solid wood (both coniferous and non-coniferous). Engineered wood products such as corrugated, plywood, OSB, etc. are exempt. If there is any solid wood used in the packaging, the unit must be marked accordingly.
Softwood
All conifer wood is classed as softwood.
Non-coniferious wood is wood from trees that are not gymnospermous trees that bear cones, such as pines and firs.
As coniferous wood is softwood it would be inclined, given the same conditions, to decay faster.
