The Ganges is one of the sacred rivers of India. In fact, all rivers are sacred and worshiped in India. Ganges is the river Goddess ( Ganga in Sanskrit) originated from the foot of Sri Maha Vishnu, and brought down to the Earth by Maharishi Bhageeratha by his penance. Lord Siva curbed the fantabulous speed and impact of the Ganges running down to the Earth in his enormous locks on his head and allowed to flow mellifluously down the great Himalayas.

Hindus worship the Goddess Ganga and bathe in the River Ganges to ward off their sins.
