Gota is a dance which originated from the Benin people of West Africa and was performed as a tribute to their war god. The dance later migrated to Ghana, where it was adopted by the Ewe people, who now perform it recreationally. It is characterized by a distinct drum called the calabash, or "the drum of the dead" which used to be played at funerals in Benin. Changes in the drum beat signal changes in moves and stops in the dance.
