The corrupted blood incident occurred after the release of the Zul'Gurub raid. The final boss, Hakkar, would place a disease on players during the fight that could spread throughout the raid. A bug was found and exploited to take the disease out of the raid and into highly populated areas such as capital cities. The disease then quickly spread and killed most low level players and annoyed higher level ones. More information can be found at the link below.
