Why is methergine used?

It is most commonly used to prevent or control excessive bleeding following childbirth and spontaneous or elective abortion, and also to aid in expulsion of retained products of conception after a miscarriage.

Is it possible to have a miscarriage and not the pass the tissue of the fetus?

Yes you can. Sometimes the baby dies but you do not 'miscarry' it. Eventually you will probably pass it but sometimes you may need to be induced. Unfortunately this is called a missed abortion. DICTIONARY Abortion. Medical term for termination of pregnancy by any means before the fetus (baby) is able to survive. Threatened abortion. Bleeding and/or cramps with the fetus still alive and the cervix (neck of the wonb) still closed. May go on to become Inevitable abortion. (Miscarriage) Cervix opens and fetus is lost. Incomplete abortion. Some of the products of conception (fetus and/or placenta) are retained. Therapeutic abortion. Termination of pregnancy by a medical practitioner. D and C. Dilation and Curettage. Operation whereby the gynecologist opens the cervix (dilation) and scrapes (curettes) the lining of the uteus (womb) to remove the products of conception. May follow an incomplete abortion.

What do you do if you notice incomplete evacuation of your womb after 2 months what are the likely effects?

If you have retained products of conception (placenta after a delivery or fetal tissue after a miscarriage), there will be bleeding and infection. Abdominal pain and a smelly discharge would be noticed if the bleeding has not been severe. Raised temperature and a feeling of being unwell will be noticed. You need to see your doctor immediately if you think you have retained products. On the other hand, if you have been for a termination of pregnancy, there is a rare possibility of this being unsuccessful and you will continue to develop signs of pregnancy. A pregnancy test is advised and advice from your doctor is required.

What is a D and C and What do the letters stand for?

D&C stands for dilatation & curettage. It's used as a shorhand term to mean that a woman needs to have the interior lining of her womb scraped away. This can be for many different reasons ranging from excessive tissues buildup causing heavy periods to retention of some of the products of a miscarriage. Usually done on an outpatient basis and usually you feel cramping & sore for a few days

What is a dnc pregnance?

D&C stands for dilation and curettage. Dilation is a term used for opening the cervix. It is done to access the uterus. Curettage is the sampling or scraping of the endometrium. Dilation and curettage is a common procedure performed by obstetricians and gynecologists. It is used both for treatment and diagnostic reasons. Miscarriage is common in the first trimester and is not always complete, meaning the body does not expel the pregnancy. This is potentially a great health risk that can lead to infection and related symptoms, such as fever, severe abdominal pain and bleeding. Dilation and curettage is necessary to clear any retained products of conception. D&C may be performed on an outpatient basis at a clinic or as an inpatient in a hospital surgical room. Patient positioning is like that of a pap smear: the patient lies in a supine position with the feet in the stirrups. A speculum is inserted to hold the vaginal canal open. Rods are used to dilate, or open, the cervix. A curette, a rod with a circular end, is inserted through the cervix and used to obtain a sample of the endometrium or clean the endometrial canal of debris. If abnormal bleeding occurs or endometrial hyperplasia is diagnosed, D&C is used to obtain samples of the endometrium to test for diseasees such as cancer. This is sometimes done during hysterosonograms, a procedure that uses ultrasound and saline injected into the endometrium to find polyps. If endometrial tumors, such as polyps, are the cause for abnormal bleeding, D&C is used to remove the growths, and possibly the whole endometrial lining. This relieves the patient of irregular or heavy bleeding.

What is the effect of methergine to a pregnant mother?

Methylergometrine is a blood vessel constrictor and smooth muscle agonist most commonly used to prevent or control excessive bleeding following childbirth and spontaneous or elective abortion. It also causes uterine contractions to aid in expulsion of retained products of conception after a missed abortion (miscarriage in which all or part of the fetus remains in the uterus) and to help deliver the placenta after childbirth.

When you have misscarage you push it out?

Not necessarily. It depends on how far along a pregnancy is. If a woman is only a few weeks pregnant, the embryo is very small. The woman may have a normal, or slightly heavy, period, which is actually a miscarriage, and not even know she was ever pregnant. It is possible for part of the embryo/fetus or placenta to remain in utero after a miscarriage. This is called "retained products of conception." If you suspect that you are having a miscarriage, you should contact your doctor.
