The M16 uses a short stroke, gas operated, direct impingement system of operation, and is magazine fed.

The system feeds (from the magazine), chambers the cartridge, then the hammer strikes the firing pin, which strikes the primer, firing the cartridge. Gas released during firing cycles back into the action through a gas tube, and this gas pressure pushes back on the bolt carrier, extracting the cartridge, ejecting the cartridge, then starting the cycle again by feeding another cartridge from the magazine.

Was the M14 useful in Vietnam?

THE M14 IS A SEMI/ FULL AUTO RIFLE IN 7.62x51 CALIBER and it took people down in one shot. The M14 cartridge (bullet) delivered approximately twice the power of the M16. The M14 rifle was also more rugged, because it was made from steel, versus the M16, which used aluminum. The M14, though, was much heavier than the M16, at 11 pounds versus 8 pounds for the M16. The M14 also required less maintenance due to its gas piston design versus the M16 direct gas impingment system. The M16 gas system was simpler, but produced more fouling of the rifle inner workings. Both the M16 and M14 were deadly weapons. Each weapon has it advantages and disadvantages.

What is the difference between an m16 and an m4a1?

Not really too much to tell. The M16 has a longer barrel, and the projectiles will leave the barrel with greater velocity for it. The M4 has the collapsible buttstock and 14.5 inch barrel, so it would be the easier of the two to utilise in urban terrain and such. The M16's longer gas system is the more reliable of the two, and the muzzle flash and noise of the M16 is reduced. The operating mechanism is the exact same, except that the M4 and M16 won't use the same return spring or buffer.
