Popular belief is that D stands for "Descision". But officially the d is not an abbreviation for some word. The word d-day is used by the millitairy to pinpoint the point in time at which an operation starts. Just like h-hour indicates the hour at which the opperation starts. These words are used to plan ahead. Like "from d-day minus 3 until d-day minus 1" troop move to their jump off areas", "on d-day, h-hour + 2 objectives a and b have to be secured", "on d+1 objectives x and y have to be taken", "on d+2 division Q arrive as reinforcement at ...", etc. Quite handy when (a) you do not yet know the exact day and hour the opperation starts, and (b) you want to communicate plans but do not yet want everybody (especially the enemy) exactly when it will take place.
