General Irwin McDowell is most remembered for the defeat at the first Battle of Bull Run, nevertheless he remained an active officer. At the end of the US Civil War, McDowell was placed in charge of the Department of the Pacific. He gained the promotion to major general in 1872 and retired from the US Army in 1882.

When Confederate President Jefferson Davis was promoted to major general in September of 1861, Davis was given a new assignment. He was appointed to command the Second Army Corps of the Army of Mississippi then under the command of General Albert Sidney Johnston. Bragg fought his first major battle at Shiloh in April of 1862. When General Johnston fell wounded in the first day of the battle, Bragg controlled the battle until General PT Beauregard took charge.
