The deadliest camp was Auschwitz-Birkenau. That was the most brutal, horrifying camp which was the only to succeed in killing over one-million people. The number was 1,400,000 murdered. This does not mean you faced anything less in other concentration camps.

Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest of the Nazi Concentration (Death) Camps. The recorded number of deaths was in excess of a million people. Following closely behind was Treblinka. Treblinka's recorded numbers were in excess of 800,000. However, Treblinka remained open until 1943 and documentation by the Death Camp officials became irregular as their frantic pace to destroy evidence increased.

Auschwitz consisted of multiple camps - Stammlager, known as Auschwitz I was the base camp. Birkenau, the Vernichtungslager or extermination camp was known as Auschwitx II, and Buna-Monowitz - a labour camp. There were an additional 45 satellite camps which were essentially work units.

Auschwitz was designated by Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler, Germany's Minister of the Interior), as the place of the "final solution of the Jewish question in Europe"

Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops on January 27th, 1945. Today it is commemorated around the world as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
