Good manners depend on where you are and who you are with. Most people feel their culture has a lock on good manners however American tourists are often surprised when travelling when they are seen as uncouth when they do such things as:
- touch a child's head
- shake hands with the host's wife
- open a present in the presence of the giver
- thanking a servant
- offer gifts with the left hand
- talk to the English queen
- show the bottom of their feet when sitting
- ask Thais why they have a king
- wear shorts into a church
- smile in public
all of which are bad manners in some part of the world.
Good manners comes down to behaving in a way that does not make others uncomfortable
