Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is a term originally referring to mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. It is commonly used in practice to refer to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) when this is viewed as a time zone, especially by bodies connected with the United Kingdom, such as the BBC World Service,

The Greenwich Meridian (Prime Meridian or Longitude Zero degrees) marks the starting point of every time zone in the World. GMT is Greenwich Mean (or Meridian) Time is the mean (average) time that the earth takes to rotate from noon-to-noon. GMT is World Time and the basis of every world which sets the time of day and is at the centre of the time zone map. GMT sets current time or official time around the globe. Most time changes are measured by GMT. Although GMT has been replaced by atomic time (UTC) it is still widely regarded as the correct time for every international time zone.

London = GMT = 12.00 Algeria = GMT+1 = 1.00

GMT is abbreviation for Greenwich Mean Time. The term originally referring to mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London.

Historically the term GMT has been used with two different conventions for numbering hours. The old astronomical convention (before 1 January 1925) was to refer to noon as zero hours, whereas the civil convention during the same period was to refer to midnight as zero hours. The latter convention is modern practice (on and after 1 January 1925) for astronomical as well as civil purposes. The more specific terms UT and UTC do not share this ambiguity, always referring to midnight as zero hours.

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. This is the time zone of the United Kingdom, and also the universal time standard. Meaning, on a global level, all other time zones are described as relative to GMT.

For example, the Eastern Standard Time zone of the U.S. is 5 hours behind GMT. Thus, EST would be listed as GMT - 5: Greenwich Mean Time, minus 5 hours.

France is 1 hour ahead of GMT, so, French time would be listed as GMT + 1: Greenwich Mean Time, plus 1 hour.

Having one international time standard, and describing all other time zones as relative to that one international time standard, makes things easier when dealing with people internationally. Imagine being in Chicago and trying to arrange a conference call with people in Moscow, Los Angeles and Hong Kong: "Well, Hong Kong is 4 hours ahead of Moscow, 16 hours ahead of Los Angeles, and 14 hours ahead of Chicago, while Moscow is 4 hours behind Hong Kong, 10 hours ahead of Chicago, and 12 hours ahead of Los Angeles, and Los Angeles is 2 hours behind Chicago, 12 hours behind Moscow..."

It can get pretty confusing. It's much easier to say, "Chicago is GMT - 6, Moscow is GMT + 4, Hong Kong is GMT + 8, and Los Angeles is GMT - 8."

Nowadays, however, the name given to the official universal time standard is UTC (Universal Coordinated Time). This is exactly the same thing as GMT, just a different name.

So actually, when arranging a conference call between Chicago, L.A., Moscow and Hong Kong, you would say, "Chicago is UTC - 6, Moscow is UTC + 4, Hong Kong is UTC + 8, and L.A. is UTC - 8."

It is Grenwich Mean Time. There is an astronomical observatory in the city of Greenwich, England, which is able to determine the exact time at its own location (of course, since the introduction of GMT, other even more precise methods of measuring time have been invented) which is why that location was chosen as the starting point for all the time zones of the world, whose time is measured relative to that of Greenwich.

What is the equivalent CDT to GMT?

Its GMT -5 hrs. CDT = GMT-5 hrs (i.e. if its 18:00 hrs @ GMT then it would be 13:00 hrs @ CDT) CDT stands for Central Daylight Time. Its basically Daylight Saving Time (DST) for Central Time (CT) which is applicable or get activated during summers only. You can say that CDT is the summer time zone for CT. Normally CT is GMT-6 hrs but due to this daylight saving it becomes DST @ GMT-5 with the saving of 1 hr. After the Summer months Central Time is shifted back by 1 hour to US Central Standard Time (CST) or (GMT-6). Regards Chander Sangra
