The function keys f1 to f12, combined with the Ctrl and or Alt keys, add extra functions to the keyboard without the need for even more keys. For instance, on my Ubuntu computer, pressing down the Ctrl and Alt keys and tapping the letter T key will open a terminal window on the screen. Pressing the f11 key will toggle between a full view without taskbars showing (taking up screen space) or the normal view with taskbars showing.

What is the function of the functions keys?

The function keys are the top row of keys on the keyboard, normally labelled F1-F12.By themselves they have no function - they are 'blank' spare keys meant for programs that want a place to put various keyboard shortcuts. That is, the function of the function keys is not determined by the keys but by the program using them, and could be anything or nothing.
