They are called 'simple' because they have one verb.

So for present simple the verb is the base form -- I likeice cream. They like ice cream. We like ice cream.

or the third person singular form -- She likes ice cream. The teacher likes ice cream. The dog likes ice cream.

For past simple the verb is in the past form: -- I likedthe movie. She liked the movie too. They ate too fast. The dog ran away.

Simple past tense is used to describe actions that were completed in the past. It is formed by adding "-ed" to regular verbs or using an irregular verb form (e.g. "walked" or "ate"). Simple present tense is used to describe actions that are habitual or factual in the present or future. It uses the base form of the verb (e.g. "walk" or "eat").
