When these plates slide or move, it causes an earthquake. For example most recently it was reported that there was one in Nortwest Iran. Thie force of this is measured on "Richter scale" and the more higher it is on the scale, the more powerful it is - causing more destruction.

However, if this happens under the oceans, then it can trigger a Tsunami. A most recent example of this is the 2004 Tsunami in which thousands of people died. and more recently in Japan and the Fukushima Nuclear power plant. There are systems that can be used to warn people that a Tsunami is about to occur but people may not have time to move out of the area. The best that can be done is to move to a very high point.
