Do you mean "sympathetic"? It comes from two roots, "pathos" which means to feel, and "syn" which means "together with". If you are sympathetic with someone or something, you feel together with them, or you feel what they are feeling. "I am sympathetic to the cause of the oppressed Wal-mart employees--I feel their pain."

The term sympathetic is used to describe showing compassion, understanding, or support towards someone experiencing difficulties or challenges. It can also refer to the part of the autonomic nervous system responsible for the fight-or-flight response in stressful situations.
