From the German "blitz" which means lightning, and "krieg" which means war. Advances in military technology after the First World War meant that tactical attack aircraft could attack a portion of an enemy's line, and armoured divisions and motorized troops could pour through and penetrate deeply into enemy territory very quickly. Hence "lightning war". The aircraft developed for the specific purpose of this kind of tactical attack was the Ju-87 Stuka which more than any other weapon is associated with Blitzkrieg.
