I would say that proper weight training is safe weight training. It's always great to have good form while working out. If you want more info, it's best to search around for blogs online that have free info about working out.

There are too many to list in a short answer. Perhaps the best way to think of it is to avoid using improper techniques. The most important one is to use proper exercise form; if you do not know what proper exercise form is for a given exercise, you should not do that exercise. Also, never use momentum.

Never use a weight that is so heavy that it causes you to twist or contort your body to raise it. Some exercises (for example, behind-the-neck presses, smith machine squats, or doing dips with a weight tied around your waist) are so dangerous that they should never be performed. Perhaps the best book to read on this is Stuart McRobert's BUILD MUSCLE, LOSE FAT, LOOK GREAT. You may be able to borrow a copy from your local library or ask your librarian to order it for you.

  1. Use a spotter for heavy free weights.
  2. Always stretch before and after any workout.
  3. Listen to your body; not all pain is good.
  4. Know your limitations before you try to push them.
  5. Inspect machines to make sure that all bolts and such are properly tightened.
  6. Don't anger people who are bigger than you.
  7. Stay hydrated and well-nourished.
  8. Use only dry and clean equipment (bring a towel).
