The Epic Of Gilgamesh: Summary

Gilgamesh is a powerful king who builds a city called Uruk. He gets all cocky and starts using his authority unfairly against his people and the earth. The gods decide to make him a friend who will be a good influence on him. They name this friend Enkidu. Enkidu meets Gilgamesh in Uruk and they decide to bond by killing the guardian of the forest that the gods created to protect it from the humans, Humbabba. The gods get really angry and send the Bull of Heaven to destroy Uruk as a punishment for Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Instead, Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the Bull too. This makes the gods really angry so they kill Enkidu and send him into the afterlife. Gilgamesh is super sad that his best friend dies. He starts worrying about what it will be like to die someday and sets off on a quest to find the key to immortality. He travels far and wide and finally finds a man named Utnapishtim who was given immortality as a reward for surviving the great flood (some believe that Utnapishtim= Noah, see The Bible story about the great flood). Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh how to become immortal after much persuasion. The key is to find a flower that grows at the bottom of the sea and eat it. Gilgamesh finds the flower by tying rocks to his feet and jumping into the sea. As he travels back to Uruk, he stops to drink water from a river and a snake steals the flower. Gilgamesh is really sad and angry that he lost the chance to be immortal. Utnapishtim finds him and gives him new clothes that will look like new until he gets to Uruk. In the end, Gilgamesh goes back to Uruk and realizes that he has got it pretty good... he doesn't need to be immortal. He then writes down the entire story for everyone else to read.

• So the five major events are... Enkidu is created for Gilgamesh, Enkidu and Gilgamesh anger the gods by killing Humbabba and the Bull, Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh finds the flower of immortality, Gilgamesh loses the flower and realizes that he didn't need it after all.
