### Water has a density of 1ml will an object with 5ml sink or float?

Water has a density of 1 gram of mass for each cc (or ml) of
volume.
An object with a density of less than 1 gram of mass for each cc of
volume will float in water.
An object with a density of more than 1 gram of mass for each cc of
volume will sink in water.
(But it may float in other liquids, depending on their
densities.)

### What is the ratio of the mass of a substance to the mass of an equal volume of water?

Density.
Since density = mass/volume, if you have a substance A, it has
density(A), which is given in a standard form of ## grams per cm^3
(cubic centimeter) or mL (milliliter).
The density of water is 1.0g/mL.
Thus, suppose the mass of substance A is 10 grams and it's
volume is 5 cm^3. Then, it's density is 2g/mL.
If you looked at 5cm^3 (or 5mL) of water, it's mass would be 5
grams. Therefore, the ratio of the two masses of equal volumes
substance A and water is exactly the ratio of the two densities,
which equals the density of substance A.
