There is a lot of debate about this. There are at least 2 traditional routes that have been prposed, and some more recent ones which have come to be accepted as possible. The scope of this answer is too small to really explain all of the reasons behind potential routes. The clear consensus of scholars is that the biblical Exodus of the Israelites was not an actual historical event, although they believe there could be a folk memory involved, such as the Egyptian expulsion of the Hyksos some centuries earlier, or the escape of a small band of Egyptian slaves who travelled north and joined up with the Hebrews living in Judah.
