What is the diet of a hyena?

Hyena's are an umbrella term used for several different species of related animals. The diet of all of the species classified as hyenas are omnivorous which means they eat both plants and animals. Hyenas are notorious scavengers.

Hyenas are interesting dietwise. As much as they look like dogs--especially as tiny cubs--they do not eat a normal dog diet. Morphologically [structurally], they are very close to dogs. Behaviorally, too. But they are not members of the canid family and they do not eat precisely what canines eat.

Hyenas are primarily scavengers. Depending upon type of hyena, they are somewhat predatory. With striped hyenas, this is rare. Spotted hyenas, on the other hand, are more like dogs in that they do much more hunting in packs. Aardwolves, which are hyena relatives, are insectivorous. And many members of the hyena family supplement their diets with, of all things, fruit. As a smaller predator among large predators, the hyena has adapted in many ways. Diet is just one of them.
