They are the conditional forms of "will" and "can" respectively. You might say "I will buy you a mink coat", which is unconditional, but "If I had the money, I would buy you a mink coat." is conditional. Likewise, you might say, "I can open this valve with this wrench", which is unconditional, but "If I had a wrench I could open this valve" is conditional.

"Will/would" have to do with intention, "can/could" with ability or capacity.

In recent years, sportswriters and writers of documentaries have started using "would" as a sort of past tense auxiliary, saying "Finkel would score a touchdown in the third quarter" when they mean "Finkel scored a touchdown." This derives from an earlier usage where "would" was used when looking at a past event from the perspective of a person even further in the past, such as "Little did John know that two years later she would divorce him.", which means the same as "Little did John know that she was going to divorce him two years later."

Is there a formula that will show the difference between two cells in excel?

There are lots that will show you the difference between values in different cells. All you need to do is subtract one from the other, normally the lower one from the higher one. So if you wanted to find the difference between a value in A3 and a value in B3, where A3 had the higher value, then you would use the following formula:=A3-B3You can also do it in such a way where it doesn't matter which is the highest, by using the ABS function. Sometimes that is better as when you are setting up the spreadsheet, you won't always know which cells will have the higher values. If all you need to know is what is the difference no matter which is the higher one, then you would do it like this:=ABS(A3-B3)
