To understand the difference let us first define the parts. The number is just that a number that holds the standard significance of defining where in a chronological time line each one falls. So that said, 1G came before 2G etc. . The G stands for Generation. Based on the fact that your asking the question you should know that they relate to the internet access over cellular phone systems. Each generation gets faster than the previous and uses different technologies. The differences between each varies with each generation. This should answer the question, if you are planning on do programming or looking to analyze the different technologies I would recommend that you simply go ask to a radio engineer who has worked with the systems.
1G is based on frequency modulation, analog technology,TDMA 2G is based on digital technology,FDMA 3G is based on CDMA which is a faster internet access source
iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad iPhone: 1G, 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4 iPod Touch: 1G, 2G, 3G iPad
2g is 2nd generation 3g is 3rd generation
The iPhone 2G is much slower than the iPhone 3G.

When they say its a 2g phone it means its a 2nd generation phone. Just like 1g 3g and 4g
2g is 2nd generation 3g is 3rd generation. 3g is much faster. iPhone 3G can support WCDMA and HSDPA frequencies, but the iPhone can't.
Sadly, no i tried to use 3g or 1g firmware on my ipod touch 2g and it didn't work. You have to have the exact firmware file. Like if you have an ipod touch 1g with 2.2.1 firmware you have to have the file made for a 1g itouch that has 2.2.1 firmware
3G has better memory and faster internet. The higher the G the better. This is reffering to an Iphone.
1G is flat 2G is horizontal 3G is vertical 4G is overhead 5G is pipe
