3 plate mould is chosen when you want to use point gate on the plastic part but you dont want to use hot runner or hot runner cannot be used. It means that when you want to use point gate with cold runner, 3 plate mould will be used. The 3rd plate in 3 plate mould is similar to the monifold for hot runner, is for material flowing.

The advantages to use 3 plate mould is the point gate and automatic dropping of material, low cost. The disadvantage is material waste because of sprue gate.

A 2 plate mould consists of two plates that open and close to release the final product, whereas a 3 plate mould has an additional runner plate that allows for gating and runners to be separated from the final product. This design in a 3 plate mould helps reduce cycle time and improves part quality by allowing for better cooling and gating control.
