During the twenties they started recording "Country" from the "Hillbilly" or "Old-timey" bands from Appalachia and the south eastern united states. "Cowboy" music was from Texas west... Wyoming, Nevada, and such, was considered "Western" music... Most consumers from the urban North East couldn't tell the difference, especially since they didn't have genre based radio stations. They would just play different genres during radio shows at certain times.... and they would lump the two together "Country and Western" hour... as the homogeneity of music goes... they have blended into one...
