The teaching I received in regards to this question was that the COGIC was established but because of slavery back (segregation) in the day the Whites and Blacks could not fellowship together. They basically believe in the same doctrine to a degree, except the COGIC emphasis more on the end of holiness and the way we worship the Lord.

I understand that back in the day Bishop Patterson, the leader of the COGIC along with the leader of the Church of Christ finally met and both repented for the segregation that they had allowed to continue down through the years.

Blacks feel comfortable worshiping in there style and whites feel comfortable in worshipping in their style. God intended for us as believers to not concentrate on the color of a persons skin but the content of their heart. As brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus we need to break down the walls and barriers and PTL together. How good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in UNITY. Love in Christ.

Remember that Christ did not come to bring peace, but a division!

The two are distinctively different in their doctrines. The Church of Christ has very mechanical set of doctrinal rules and regulations, amongst them the omission of music to accompany the singing of hymns. They do not believe in the miracles and signs in today's age, very much less the gifts of the spirit, namely the gift of tongues. The Church of God in Christ, however, believes in all of these things and is a bible based congregation that gives the Holy Spirit the freedom to flow in its services. The difference between the two can be likened to an iceberg and an all consuming fire!
