Catholics believe in the doctrine of transubstantiation, which means that during communion, the bread and wine literally become the body and blood of Christ. Lutherans believe in consubstantiation, which means that Christ in present with, in, and under the elements. They remain bread and wine, but Christ is in them.

Like the Eastern Orthodox, Lutherans have refused to describe the "HOW" of Christ's Real Presence in Holy Communion. Consubstantiation, as a term, is never used by Lutherans but by detractors. Lutherans clearly state that the "Body and Blood of Jesus Christ are truly present in the Bread and Wine of Holy Communion, and they are received orally. The "HOW" of this presence remains a Mystery. To eat the bread and wine is to eat the True Body and True Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is substantially present, distributed and received by all who partake of the Holy Meal."

The major differences between Lutherans and Mormons are:

Lutherans believe that true Christianity was reformed from Catholicism by Martin Luther.

Mormons believe that true Christianity was restored to Joseph Smith by Jesus Christ.

Lutherans believe in the traditional Trinity - The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one being.

Mormons believe that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three individual beings united in purpose and doctrine. The Father and Son appear as men with glorified bodies.

Lutherans believe that the Holy Bible is the only book of scripture.

Mormons believe that the Holy Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price are scripture.

Lutheran clergy are paid - being a pastor is their job. Pastors are trained in seminaries. Some Lutheran congregations allow female pastors and homosexual pastors.

Mormon clergy are unpaid volunteers - they serve only temporarily and support their family by working a regular job. There is no training or schooling. Mormons do not ordain women but do allow them to preach without ordination. Mormons allow homosexual clergy only if they are refraining from homosexual romantic relationships.

Lutherancongregations are more autonomous. While they are governed by their denominational body, the pastor has a lot of control over what curriculum is used, what services are offered, the building used, and how the congregation operates. A Lutheran Pastor or his assistant Pastors will preach to the congregation every Sunday. Some Lutheran worship services are very traditional and others are more contemporary. Some have traditional music and others use Christian pop music with a worship band.

Mormon congregations are not autonomous. Church headquarters provides the curriculum, building, schedule, and supplies. Each congregation offers the same services and programs. In a Mormon congregation, every adult and teen rotates the duty of the Sunday sermon, everyone gets a chance to preach. All Mormon services are the same style (quite traditional) and use only an organ/piano and the church-published hymn book.

There are also many Mormon beliefs and practices that do not have a comparison in Lutheranism. For example, Mormons believe that there is a living prophet, they believe that they can be baptized in behalf of their deceased ancestors, and they believe that marriages extend beyond death and into eternal life in heaven.

Well, for one thing, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) call it "Sacrament" instead of Communion.

Lutherans typically have a 'closed communion', meaning that only church members (those baptized or confirmed) should participate. Mormons have an 'open communion' (sacrament), and anyone willing to live up to the covenants mentioned in the blessing of the sacrament is welcome to participate.

Lutherans typically use wine or Grape Juice, and Mormons typically use water.

Since I am not a Lutheran and therefore have never participated in a Lutheran communion, I can't tell you how it is, but I can tell you how a Mormon Sacrament is and you can compare.

The Sacrament portion of the worship service is done each Sunday near the beginning of the service, before the sermons. It is begun by the congregation singing a hymn reflecting on the atonement, death, or resurrection of Jesus Christ. Then, the bread is blessed by a group Priests from the congregation (boys ages 16+), who stand at a table at the front of the room. It is then passed by deacons (boys 12+) to the congregation, who remain seated in their pews. After everyone has partaken of the bread, the water is blessed and passed in the same way as the bread.

These are the prayers said to bless the Sacrament:

"Oh God, the Eternal Father, we ask Thee, in the name of Thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread/water to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in rememberance of the body/blood of Thy Son, and witness unto Thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of Thy Son, and always remember Him and keep the commandments which Thou hast given them, that they may always have His Spirit to be with them. Amen."

Mormons believe that the sacrament is symbolic and represents the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ, as well as the fact that He is the 'bread of life' and the 'living water.' They also believe that the sacrament is a sacred ordinance in which they covenant (promise) to follow the example of Jesus Christ.

Is there a difference between Catholic priest and Communion minister?

Roman Catholic AnswerOne is real, the other is not. You are probably referring to what is the difference between a Catholic priest and an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. In the later question, one is an ordained member of the clergy and can confect the Eucharist, the second is usually a layman who has been specially trained and designated to help distribute Holy Communion for a limited period of time, and/or to take Holy Communion to the sick with a special license from the Bishop.

What is the difference between Catholic communion and Catholic confirmation?

In the Roman Catholic Church confirmation is regarded as a sacrament which gives the participant grace. Only the bishop confirms an individual. In the Lutheran Church confiirmation is only a rite in which the individual makes a public confession of the faith received at baptism. It is not a sacrament like baptism and Holy Communion or Lord's Supper. Confirmation follows a somewhat lengthy instruction in basic Bible doctrines.

What is difference between catholic and Episcopal communion?

The difference in communion between Roman Catholic [R.C.] and Episcopal Church [E.C.] comes from the understanding of what happens at the consecration of the bread and wine. The R.C. church believes that the bread and wine physically change into the Body and Blood of Christ. However, the E.C. believes that the change is solely spiritual. Episcopalians still have bread and wine, but the Body and Blood of Christ is present spiritually, metaphorically.

Difference between greek orthodox and Lutheran theology?

Nearly every doctrinal difference between the Lutheran and Eastern Orthodox Churches stem from two factors. 1. The Lutheran Church is a catholic, or western Church which shares its roots with the Roman Catholic Church. The forefathers of the modern Orthodox and the forefathers of the modern Roman Catholic and Lutheran Churches underwent the "Great Schism" in the first millennium over Trinitarian doctrine and 2. The Orthodox uphold Apostolic Tradition as a separate means of Church authority, while the Lutheran Church only accepts those tenets of Church Tradition which are upheld by the authority of the Canonical Scriptures. Both are liturgical, historic, sacramentarian Churches. During the Lutheran Reformation, there was much dialogue between the Greek Orthodox and Lutheran theologians as many of their grievances with Roman Catholicism are the same. There were some small, political and doctrinal issues which prevented any formal declaration of union or fellowship. Dialogue continues, and many of the differences between these two historic Churches are simply cultural.

What is the difference between episcapalion and catholic?

Both churches and the Lutheran Church are "non reformed churches". They did not eliminate the rites of the Roman Catholic Church during the reformation. The Lutheran and Episcopal Churches are Protestant churches. The Lutheran church was founder by Martin Luther when he broke away from the Catholic Church and the Episcopalian church was formed when King Henry the eighth of England broke away from the Catholic Church and the Pope. He later took over all the churches and destroyed many of them. As a side note, all Christians were Roman Catholic until the 15th century.

What were the most important differences between the Catholic and Protestant worship in the 18th century?

Protestant worship was in the local language. Catholic worship was in Latin. The protestant congregations sang hymns. The Catholic congregations did not. Since the Lutheran worship service was a translation of the Roman Catholic one before Trent, little difference existed there.
