Our Universe today is MUCH bigger than Copernicus could have imagined. In the first place, their idea was that our galaxy was the universe, and had no idea that many of those stars they wondered about were actually galaxies much like our own, including some vastly larger. The next major advance was the invention of the telescope followed by Galileo's creative studies with that, and that was when they began to realize that ours was not the only planet in the Universe.
