I hate to split hairs here but there are 3 major sects of the Lutheran Church in the United States: the Evangelical Lutheran Church; the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod; and the Lutheran Church Wisconsin Synod. The latter 2 are by far much more conservative than the Evangelical Lutherans. The latter 2 are opposed to gay ordination and allowing gays to marry in the church. They are much more fundamentalist especially when it comes to The Bible. The Evangelical Lutherans share much in common with the United Methodists. The one area where they are more progressive is in the realm of gay marriage and all that. The UMC are much more split on this issue. The ELCA has already voted to allow their pastors who are gay to marry. They are also close to allowing gays to marrry in the church. The ELCA can be described as a pro-life rather than a pro-choice denomination. The United Methodists have always taken a pro-choice position on reproductive rights. The ELCA and the United Methodist Churches are also in full communion since 2008. Both can share the pulpit and celebrate Holy Communion in each other's churches. In the Missouri and Wisconsin Synods, that is still not possible. These two branches have more in common with the evangelical branch of Protestanism, like the Baptists.

Nearly every doctrinal difference between the Lutheran and Eastern Orthodox Churches stem from two factors. 1. The Lutheran Church is a catholic, or western Church which shares its roots with the Roman Catholic Church. The forefathers of the modern Orthodox and the forefathers of the modern Roman Catholic and Lutheran Churches underwent the "Great Schism" in the first millennium over Trinitarian doctrine and 2. The Orthodox uphold Apostolic Tradition as a separate means of Church authority, while the Lutheran Church only accepts those tenets of Church Tradition which are upheld by the authority of the Canonical Scriptures. Both are liturgical, historic, sacramentarian Churches. During the Lutheran Reformation, there was much dialogue between the Greek Orthodox and Lutheran theologians as many of their grievances with Roman Catholicism are the same. There were some small, political and doctrinal issues which prevented any formal declaration of union or fellowship. Dialogue continues, and many of the differences between these two historic Churches are simply cultural.

There are many many differences, between the two bodies. I was raised in the Methodist and Presbyterian church , which are much more similar de to the roots of the denominatons. Lutheranism was patterned from Reformer Martin Luther a Roman Catholic priest. Although his 95 thesis was posted on the fdoor the Lutheran Church has remained the closest of the Protestant bodies to Catholic in doctrine and liturgy. Although Anglican is also similar to Catholic, there are many points of differences in doctrin which Anglican has more in common with the Reformed faith. Methodism which came from the word Methodical traces its roots to John Wesley an Anglican priest. The Methodist church became more of an evangelical holliness and revivalist denomiation. Some churches will vary in style. While still having some similarities to anglican, they still retain close resemblance to the Presbyterian church as well. Methodist are much less liturgical than Lutherans and have differences in doctrine regarding the sacraments of communion and baptism. Lutherans believe in consubstantiation ( similar to Catholics) with regards to Communion while Methodist hold a spiritual significance, much different. Methodist services can resemble a low episcopal or Presbyterian or Congregational church, but not a Lutheran liturgy at all, which again is much more similar to Roman Catholic.
