A shin splint is just basically minor pain in your shins while a stress facture is when the shin bone is actaully damaged and it will try to heal its self but as it does so it may cause "bumps" on your shin bone. Stess factures are much more painful as well.
If the test is set to load-control , it means that the stress will not drop once the fracture become unstable. In displacement control the stress may drop at unstable fracture.
The physician will check the leg for tenderness. If the pain is in a single area of the tibia and hurts to the touch, the cause may by a stress fracture. The physician may order an x ray. but shin splints often can be diagnosed without x rays.
